1999 s10 noise
Hi guys I'm trying to diagnose a somewhat clicking and chugging my s10 has. I thought it was exhaust or lifters but recently brought it to my brothers mechanic friend who said it doesn't seem to be either after inspection but couldn't really 100% confirm the noise but said it seemed like it could be the starter gears not disengaging right and I should start with that
I changed the serpentine belt and pulley which was pretty bad but it didn't really help.
Could a starter really continuously make noise?

Can you reproduce that noise and shoot video of it and post here? I am almost positive, you'd have HEARD LOUD if solenoid is not disengaging, and hitting flywheel. Most likely, it's a relay somewhere.
A/C? That clicks and chugs all the time working.

I can try to record it but I would have to be driving so I'll have to see how it comes out. Its pretty loud and constant but really only when driving in gear. If parked its not noticabe. I did check all the pullies when the belt was off and will say the ac was a bit squeaky but wasn't sure if that meant I'd have to change the whole compressor or if I could jus change the pulley

How many miles are on the truck? There are many possible causes and you have suggested a couple of them. Have you ruled out a loose timing chain for example? What is the condition of the ignition system? Is there only a noise on a load while driving, or can you reproduce it at all when parked by revving the engine? Are you sure it is engine related? If not you can also think about drive shaft/u-joint, along with wheel bearings. These kinds of noises are very difficult to diagnose on a forum such as this without having access to the truck. Everything will be pretty much a wild guess, or a list of some possible sources for the noise.

FWIW, I can attest that a starter can make a continual clicking noise when it fails. Had to replace the starter in the wrecker couple of months ago; basically the bendix spring broke so there wasn't a positive pull-back from the flywheel after starting. It would disengage from the flywheel, but then ride right next to it clicking and clanging. First one I ever had that failed in that manner.

Since I have a 96 s10 and no one has asked you so far, is it a 4.3 6 cylinder or the 2.2 4 cylinder? Stick or automatic?
4x4 or two wheel?
Some engines / models had certain issues and this info may help us guide you better.

someone here suggested interesting way of recording engine noises whilst driving - cutting garden hose, placing it underneath the hood, and running it into the cabin via open window. works as "on the go" stethoscope.
I have 2000 Silverado, and being GM product, am very well familiar with pulleys noise. Not clicking. Whining and grinding. I already had idler replaced twice, along with tensioner. Now, water pump pulley starts making noise. But it's high pitch tsiao-tsiao-tsiao type noise every time.

Sorry guys its a 6 cylinder 4.3 4wd
Has 140k but its in great shape.
Heres two vids. First is I believe a buzzing fuel pump
Second is the clicking which only does in gear so I had my girl hold the break n drive and rev.
It sounds like its from everywhere but like I said on the op on the lift he used a long screwdriver to listen to the engine and tranny.

IMO fuel pump noise is normal. You should hear mine...LOL. They are notoriously loud.
Now just a thought when I did replace my pump 26 bolts held the tank skid plate on to get to the tank straps to drop it....Nope.
Lift the bed? Nope, bolts were carriage bolts so rusted I did not want to touch them.
Solution was line up top of fuel pump and I cut at 8"x8" access panel in the bed. Uses a diamond blade on grinder set to go down only 1". You have about 4-5" of clearance. Made a new cover plate, put the bed liner back in, done. 1 1/2 hour job.
Am I saying do this? No. Just saying what I did.
As far as the clicking, what I would do is give the started a quick turn with the engine running when you have the clicking sound. Do I recommend it? No. Just saying what I would do on my own vehicle. May eliminate if its the started or not.
Now the 4x4 system on this use a vacuum actuator. You may have an issue there with the motor not disengaging the transfer case. There is a fork that locks the front axle. It may be in between.
Do you have shift on the fly or the dash buttons for 4 wheel option?
Try putting it in and out of 4 wheel drive a couple times and see what happens.

i have the buttons. never even touched them. nice idea on the 4x4 option. I have to look up how to engage the 4wd cause i dont want to f it up, this is actually my first 4wd vehicle
i like your idea of cutting the access panel in the bed, i do have a liner so not a bad idea if my bolts are rusted since i planned on pulling the bed for it.
how do i give the starter a turn with the engine running? isnt the starter always spinning when the engine is on? i would like to try this but would probably need some guidance on how. would not want to lose a finger somehow lol.
i can tell the starter is original, and i found a site online with some fairley inexpensive so when i get paid this week i may order one.

I mean thats what I would do if it were my vehicle. Your opinion may be different then mine.
Read your manual on how to use the 4x4. Try it and let us know.

yeah i re-start my toyota once in a while by accident cause its so quiet lol.
so basically just repop the ignition and see if the noise goes away? Ill give it a shot. Wont hurt the engine will it?
I will also try the 4x4 switch a few times to see.
thanks a ton.

Bought my first 4wd a few years ago (89 K1500) and the guys over at a Chevy forum suggest you put it in 4wd every month or two just to keep things limbered up. Makes sense to me.

We had it on a lift and still couldn't trace it out. Why it was narrowed down to possibly the starter. Just got home so couldn't try lawrosa's suggestion but will tommorow

well tried both switching the 4x4 on/off a few times and turning the ignition while on and didnt help.
hate to have to dump the money into a starter when Im not sure thats what it is but I guess thats what having a car is about most times.

Chalk one of for The Tow Guy (see post #5)!
tevil, that's exactly what mine looked like when I replaced it. Was that an oem AC-Delco or an aftermarket? Weird to see that happen to someone else after just having the same thing so recently.
