2000 Silverado Starter Bendix

I have a 2000 Silverado LS 4.8L extended cab. The issue that has started in the last couple of days is this. When I turn the key to start it, it starts fine but when I release the key it sounds like the bendix is not retracting from the flywheel fast enough and I can here it grind just momentarily.

Here is the question... Does this sound like a week bendix spring issue to you all? If so how hard is it to replace the bendix in a starter on this vehicle? Any tips would be much appreciated.

Historically GM has had shimming problems on their starters. Starters get replaced and the shims are lost and not installed and the bendix binds.

I personally rebuild alternators but I wouldn't consider rebuilding starters. I would recommend exchanging for a rebuilt and check on the shim issue.
