door lock actuators

I have 2 door lock actuators to change on a 1999 F-250. The mechanic I use can't get it in for 2 or 3 weeks. Are these very hard to change yourself? Some have told me that the door clips are easy to break if you don't know what you're doing.

Windowwalt,

You asked if the actuators are hard to change by yourself? Well that cannot be accurately answered till you post your level of skill. Furthermore the 2 to 3 week wait for the actuators is nonsense. There is nothing special or extraordinary about your particular door actuators. They are common and in stock with most quality auto parts houses. You’ll have a better chance of finding them at a cheaper price online. With that being said visit the links below to get you started.

As far as not breaking the door clips goes use the tool in the link that appears below to keep the clips from breaking.

On a 99 E series van they are riveted in and are a bear to change.

It's been a while since I had the door cover off a 99 P/U. You may not find any clips.

You need to pop off the little wedge piece that covers the mirror area. No tools should be needed for that. There is one screw behind the little (red) marker light on the door. The red cover carefully unsnaps.

The last screw is under the switch area. The switch panel is lifted up from the end that faces the dash. One clip hold that end down and the back end is just slid in.

So that's two screws and one little trim panel.

Now.....the door panel should just lift straight up. You'll see the little plastic hooks that slide into slots in the metal of the door.

DON'T pry on the panel. It just lifts up.

Thanks for your help. Amy I guess I worded it wrong originally. I already have the actuators from Ford. Mechanic just can't get to it for a few weeks. I've changed plenty of starters and alternators and I removed the speedometer cluster from my wifes Yukon and sent it in for service without issue so maybe I can handle a door panel.

PJmax your post concerns me about the rivets because my 99 is and early 99 model and I think they were made on the E-series assembly line.

Dang! I wish I would have looked around first! I gave $160 for 2 actuators at the dealership! Could have bought all 4 for under $100!!!

My van is also an early 99 run as I just missed ordering at the end of 1998 production run.
My van was built in Canada.
