How many amps for new alternator?

I have a 92' Ford Ranger XLT with 2.9 V6. How can I find out what amount of amps to get in a replacement alternator? I checked stickers in engine compartment and on alternator and didn't find anything. I didn't see a metal stamp on alternator itself. Thanks, Dave

Autozone only lists 3 for a 3.0L (no 2.9L listed) and they vary from 95 to 140 max output. Oddly the 95A with a 1 yr warranty is only $5 less than one that is rated 108A with a lifetime warranty.

Higher amperage won't hurt anything and 108 would probably be all you need on a '92 that has much less electrical draw than many newer cars. I guess if you were towing or had added electrical accessories like radiator fans or inverters it might be worth popping $20 more for the 140A but I doubt you'd need it

No towing. I have all factory electrical equipment except for aftermarket water temp, oil pressure, and voltmeter gauges. And one of the gauges is mechanical.

What about pulley type and number of grooves? I think some are made for serpentine, and mine is the old type belt. My make/model uses alternator with built-in voltage regulator.

Hmmm...didn't think about pulleys. Is that the original engine? I also looked at a '91 ranger and it uses S belt as well.

This site may be of help Ford Ranger/Bronco II 2.9 liter Engines ...Autozone isn't doing much. They show no 2.9L after about 1990.

The listed site may have a chat area that would help?

1992 definitely had a 2.9 V6. But selecting the rght pulley shouldn't be too much of a problem. I'll get a new one. I'll never use a rebuilt alternator again. These often go bad in under a year, or even defective straight off the shelf in my experience
Thanks

I wouldn't buy a 1 year warranted rebuilt alternator either, but I have had very good luck with lifetime warranted remanufactured alternators. The last one I bought was from Carquest and it lasted 50,000 miles for me till I traded the truck.

I didn't know it was against forum policy to post phone numbers. Let me get back to you. Right now I'm really busy.

Thank You

Somehow I doubt bluesbreaker is going to be spending over $300 for an upgraded alternator...and who knows how much for that other unit that is trying to delude people in to thinking their electrical system will output over 400 amps. They need a new ad writer.

And why are almost none of the parts places (incl AZ and the others I could check online) mentioning a 2.9L engine?

I finally found it listed at RockAuto (best prices too) but they don't list whether they have S or V belt pullys. Every pic shows an S.

Those would be a bit of an overkill in this case. I'm not sure if those could be driven from a single V belt either.
