85 Ranger Auto Transmission

I have an 85 Ranger with an auto transmission - all forward gears work great but reverse does not - works when transmission is cool - but once its heated up - it starts to slip

Unfortunately, the symptoms you mention are common with auto transmissions that are at, or near, the end of their lives. However, I recommend that you follow the steps below before you commit to having the trans rebuilt or replaced:

1. Make sure that the trans fluid level is correct as per the owner's manual.

2. Check the condition of the fluid. Dark and/or "burnt" smelling fluid indicates (at the very least) the need for a trans fluid and filter change.

3. Consider adding a bottle of "Trans-X" to the fluid as per the directions noted on the container. This can sometimes help "rejuvenate" the various rubber seals within the trans which, in turn, might give you some extra time before you find it necessary to rebuild or replace the trans. Just understand that sometimes this "works" and sometimes it doesn't.

Btw, welcome to the forums!
