Gas gauge intermittent

I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado which has an inconsistent gas gauge. When I fill the tank it registers on the gauge I have an empty tank. After using some fuel it shows what I assume the correct fuel amount. Periodically as the tank gets closer to empty it again registers empty. I would assume it is either the gauge or the float. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forums!

While a sticking float is a possibility I'd closely inspect the wiring [especially near/at the tank] first.

It's also a very common problem for the sender to go bad. It's a coil of resistance type wiring that the float arm slides over. That wire gets rusted and worn out causing loss of a gauge reading. Unfortunately it's not repairable and the fuel pump and the sender is replaced as a unit by dropping the fuel tank.

Floats tend to get stuck and then the gauge doesn't move. I think PJ has the most likely scenario nailed.
