1988 Chevy C3500 pickup 454

I am having trouble with the way my truck is running. It starts and runs fine until it has been running awhile, and then whenever I stop it dies, unless I give it gas while I am braking. Any ideas why it is doing this?

Also, a later question. I am planning a project I guess you could call it. I have a 1988 C3500 ext cab truck, and I am wanting to put a newer chevy ext cab truck body on this chassis. Could anyone tell me what years, say 1990 or newer would fit, and what all will it entail, or where I can find out? The main reasons is that I hate the crappy instrument panel gages, and I would really like to have newer interior. I want to keep my 1 ton chassis, and 454 motor. I had thought of just replacing the interior, and dashboard, but was told that the computer or something has to be changed and is expensive, so I figured it might be cheaper to just try to find a whole newer body, or would I still need a new chip? Thank you.

This is a carbureted engine.....correct ?

It could be a stuck EGR valve.
It could be a fuel bowl level issue.
It could also be a vacuum leak.

How does it idle when not in drive ?

Can't help you much on the body/chassis swap.

Fine, unless it has been driven long enough to start dieing. It will start back up but just die right after it starts.

It is carbureted engine? Start with EGR valve , stuck choke, Idle screw backed out. to start with. No help with rest.

It is TBI, throttle body injected.

It does not have a carburetor.

would still check the egr valve as it can cause an engine to die even on a fuel injected engine, if its sticking open or not closing all the way.
you can remove the egr valve and see if its closed or hung open, sometimes they can be fixed by cleaning.
would also check for codes stored in the computer easily checked by jumpering a and b of the aldl connector under the dash and counting the check engine light flashes would just do a search for more info if needed.
could also try cleaning the idle air control valve on the throttle body.
