Rack-it lumber rack with rust

If these have rust on them, are they able to be saved - primed and painted - and still be structurally functional? Or once rust starts, the integrity of the structure is compromised?

I'm looking into getting one, but it has some rust.

If it's just surface rust with no big chunks of rusty metal falling off, you should be able to remove all the loose rust, prime with a rusty metal primer, and paint. Once a rack like that has seen any use at all it starts to rust (except for the aluminum ones). I've seen some with plenty of rust that were still perfectly functional.

They also make rust convertor paints that convert the rust to a hard paintable surface.

Rust conversion coatings work but it is still best to mechanically remove as much rust as possible first!
If the price is right I wouldn't be scared of surface rust.
