Tailgate open warning light kit

I have a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 with a tonneau cover, which prevents me from seeing if I was remiss in closing the tailgate. I have had enough of walking back to check which tool just fell out on the road because I got in a hurry and drove off without checking the gate. I can make a warning light, but thought there might already be a kit available out there. I did a google search and could not find anything. Any help from you guys?

I've never seen it as a kit offered but I had done it many times.

The tailgate ajar request was needed for one of two reasons. One was to indicate it ajar and the other was for an alarm system.

I used sealed magnetic switches. The style is shown in the following link. There are less expensive choices. You can search for " form c magnetic contacts ".

Tailgate open warning light

why couldn't I just put in a spring loaded Light switch (like in the doors) that turns a light on when the tailgate is open? Seems like it would be a lot easier and cheaper?

Certainly.... a spring loaded switch would work just fine.
