My tires born in 2004....time for new ones ?

These are 16 inch Nokian tires. DOT code is UTOK NCC 3404. So, they appear to be made in August of 2004. They look good. No cupping or other wear. Lots of tread left. I can't see any cracks in the sidewalls, inside or outside.

This Ford Ranger is a 2000. These are the second set. I bought used in 2006 with 73,729 miles and today's reading is......77,666. (Yep, 3937 miles in 11 years)...... Has been garaged since I bought it.

We have a class A motorhome and the RV forums advise any MH tire over 7 years be replaced. Looking good, bad or otherwise. I can almost see the logic with a 22,000 lb. vehicle.....blow-out safety, especially a sidewall.

So.....what do you advise about tires for our Ford Ranger?

Gosh, if those tires haven't become brittle, just sitting in the garage, I'd be surprised.

"Nokia" makes me think that these are Winter Tires ?

You've only driven them less than 400 miles per year for 11 years . . . . are you planning a trip now ?

If so, then I'd get new tires.

I let the intended use of the vehicle play a part in whether or not to keep the tires. If it's mostly around town, no high speed or long distance driving I'd be inclined to keep them until they are either worn or start to getting weather checked. If I expect to jump in the truck and go across the state - I'd want to make sure I had trustworthy tires!

Decided to buy new tires. Contenders are: Cooper/Hercules Ironman All Country A/T...........Dean Wintercat SST and Cooper Mastercraft Courser LTR.

Any thoughts on the above tires ? Thanks

May I squeeze in a related question, please: Forgot about my spare tire. It is from 1999. 235-75R15. I need a new one. Can I buy a 245/75R15 and run it in case I need a spare tire. (I am getting 4 new 245/75R16). Thanks again.......

For me...if I'm buying 4 new tires and need to replace the spare I usually pick the best of the 4 old ones to use as a spare. It might not work if they're all in really bad shape but all you really need is enough tread to be safe and to get you to a tire repair shop.

My 2 cents...

Hi Jim.....spare is a 15 inch and new tires are 16 inch. Can't figure out if there is a new 15 inch with the proper dimensions....I can use to get to a repair shop.

Not ideal but you can run the wrong size temporarily to get to a tire repair shop. That's why the donut spares have the 50 mph & 50 mile limit warning on them.

I dunno, 16" tire on a 15" wheel doesn't sound like a good idea....lol.

Seriously though, you'd have to go to a 265/75R15 to get the same diameter as the 245 16"s And then the tire is an inch wider, probably cost more, etc. That's if you can get one. See my link below, it says no such beast as a 245/75R15? Might be simpler to just get a steel 16" junk yard wheel and not deal with the difference.

Play with this....https://tiresize.com/calculator/ Look at the second tab, "Tire Comparison" I'd probably be checking to see if a local tire shop had one used that someone traded in when they got new tires.

As to tire choices, I had Hercules on a 2001 Mazda Tribute and though a bit noisier on pavement, never had any problems. Don't know which model and it was 6 yrs ago. Heck, I got my trucks tires at Walmart.com off brand by Michelin...$47.50 each...they'll be just fine for a 20 y/o B2300 TYVM.

They have some 245/75R16's for $88. That seems like a good price.

As long as you can get a tire with close to the same outside diameter, and intend it to only get you to the nearest service center, I would take that option over being stranded someplace at the least opportunistic time. But having heard enough firsthand accounts of component damage caused by running different size diameter tires, my first choice would be to buy a new or even secondhand wheel the same size as the ones on the vehicle and mounting the same size tire on it.

Thanks for the info. As per aka pedro......I am buying a 16 inch wheel and one more 16" matching tire for my spare. Simple works best.

Ahem...really? He was the first to mention it? Well I never.....!

Lol..just messing with you. I thought about it later and should have made that more prominent in my post. Glad he clarified it. Way easier to have the right size and fix a bad one at your convenience than having to drop everything to deal with a tire.

Btw...missed that this was a Ranger. Boy they sure changed some stuff in just a few years. My 97 B2300 (Ranger clone) had 195/75R14 as base stock with an upgrade to 215/70R14 available. Sometime in the past someone put new 15" wheels on and it had 205/70R15's on when I got it. So I replaced them with the $47 WM specials and got a slightly taller, slightly wider, bigger sidewall tire for almost 1/2 of a direct replacement would have been. Also looks better and rides higher.

Got 5 new LT245/75R16. Tire says "max load single 3042# @ 80psi". Original tires were "P245/75R16SL, 30# cold," says door sticker. Dealer set new tires to 35#. Seems low to me. How about I set to 50#.....and if hauling sand, rock, etc., set to 75# ?

over inflation can wear out the center section of tread on the tire it can also give you less traction since you obviously don't drive this vehicle much you may not be to concerned about wear but since it is a ranger its not really ever probably going to see a load on it that would require that much pressure but you can increase it some if you think you need to.
many would suggest you follow the door sticker but 30 seems very low to me also would probably stay around 35-40 psi myself.

P is for passenger and LT is for light truck, so although the size is the same I do not believe the tires are not the same. I would have clarified this first, but since you already have the tires what does the door sticker say? Specifically does it state "P" or "LT" or is it just the size? Being a Ranger I don't know, but maybe it was originally equipped with LT's and you or the previous owner opted for P tires? If the door sticker calls for LT I would be satisfied to run them at the pressure recommended on the sticker, but if it calls for P or is not specific I believe I would contact the tire manufacturer to find the allowable pressure range. 80 psi sounds high to me on a Ranger, but the issue, in my opinion is that your new LT's probably have a stiffer sidewall than your old P tires, and may require more than just 30 pounds or so to operate at a safe level.

Most regular tires now I see are for SUVs and passenger vehicles. Sure there are LTs on the racks too, but those are for real full size trucks. Since most small trucks like Rangers (esp the older ones) aren't used for real P/U duties except occasionally, LT tires are sort of overkill imo. They'll probably ride stiffer on a daily basis (boy, crank 'em up to 70lbs without a load and they'll bounce you off the road) and may not handle as well.

All depends on your primary usage and driving habits of course.

aka pedro....thanks for the info. Went to the Atturo website, punched in Ford info and their tire and it came back: #37 in front and 38# in back. Sounds reasonable.

Door sticker did not say P or LT, just the size.

I generally add a few pounds to what the door/manual recommends but ultimately I let the tire wear tell me what the pressure should be. You want even wear across the tire. If it wears more on the outside - add air, if it wears down the middle you have it aired up too high. More times than not the majority of folks run their tires too soft.

Regardless of what PSI you finally settle on, that Ranger gets driven so little (4000 miles in 11 years). I would check the tire pressure before using it for a trip of more than a couple miles.

Just sitting, it'll probably lose tire pressure just by seepage, and it will vary from wheel to wheel..

I'd develop a plan to routinely use it more.
