stop whining!

I have a '93 2WD C1500 Suburban. It has 175k miles. I seldom drive it 'cause it's so thirsty. The transmission was rebuilt a year ago.
I constantly hear a whining sound. Only when I have my foot on the gas. Even the lightest touch on the gas pedal starts the whining. Take foot off the gas and it stops. Doesn't do it if I shift to neutral and give it gas. In other words, the slightest load on the powertrain causes it.
Could it be the rear end? a wheel bearing? I greased the u-joints and topped off the differential. The drive shaft was balanced with new u-joints about 5 years ago.
