joining galvinized pipe

I have recently replaced some galvinized pipe and used teflon tape on the connections. each joint is doing well except for the union that I installed. in this joint I only wrapped the threads once with the tape. Generally, how is the teflon tape suppose to be used? is a one layer wrap good enough or should i use more? does more necessarily help? with the leaky union, is it more likely that the tape is the problem or the union itslef? one person told me to avoid using unions. I don't think there are any other options. I replaced a short run of pipe that was busted.

I generally wrap about 3 layers of teflon tape when I use it. Sometimes a union is the only way to go!

Cool

And teflon tape should be wrapped clockwise only as the threads face you.

dont use eflon tape on the mating surface of the union itself, use a little dope instead.
