sewer gas odor in bathroom

I have a cape cod with two apartments, one upstairs and one downstairs. Both apartments share the same vent stack. When the toilet upstairs is flushed, there is a gurgling sound that can be heard in the downstairs tub. Sometime later a sewer gas smell can be detected in the downstairs bathroom, but it doesn't seem to happen with every upstairs flush. The plumbing in the house has been in place for several years and has worked fine. Where shall I begin my investigation and how do I go about it?ll suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Billk

Make sure all the vents are clear, go to roof top and run water down the vents.
