Noisy one-way valve (swing valve)

I have two one-way swing valves in my fresh water plumbing and both tend to randomly make a water hammer type noise when closing -- brass flapper hitting brass valve body. These are 1/2 sweat fit, off the shelf items, available in any Home Depot or Lowes. I'm sure the valve is the source of the noise because if I access the unit and disable the swing flapper the noise ceases.

Does anyone know where I can obtain a quieter type of one-way valve?

thanks,

barry

Cool

Replace the brass flapper check valves with spring-loaded check valves with rubber seals. No noise.
Good luck!

spring-loaded check valves with rubber seals

Mike,

Thanks for the information on the spring-loaded check valves with rubber seals. The banging pipes would remind me of the old cast iron radiators and the "city" steam that I grew up with. But one last question.

Do you think that I need to locate a plumbing supply specialty store to find these quiet valves or might the local Home Depot carry such an item.

Again, thanks for the information. It's invaluable!!
