removing popup drain housing in bathtub

I have a bathtub that was installed when the house was built some 35 yrs ago. Hardware is American Sandard. the popup drain connects with the toggle switch on the overflow opening thru a complicated brass mechanisn that will not come out unless I remove the pop housing which is completely frozen in place. How does one remove this contraption. There are two tabs in the opening of the popup housing and I went at them with a screw driver and a hammer in the hope of loosening the thing, to no avail. Is there a tool I should get? Any suggestions??
