leaky faucet

I have a single handle shower faucet which is leaking pretty badly. How do I take it apart to check the washers after I have taken it apart to the stop tube. cannot get the stem out to check the washer under that. It is a moen faucet but I do not know the year or model number

There should be a horseshoe clip that holds the stem in, remove it, then the cartiage should come out, if you can;t budge it there is a moen stem puller you can get.

Just replace the cartiage.
