Leaky Waste Pipe from bathroom sink

Just found a perfectly round hole about the diameter of a pencil causing a leak on the waste drain pipe from my bathroom sink. I had to rip out the dry wall to find the leak. The pipe is difficult to gain access and I would prefer not to remove the pipe. Is there anything I can do to stop the leak permanently? Help me please, I finally finished the basement and this happens! Murphy's Law I guess.

What type of drain pipe? Galvanized? White plastic PVC? Black plastic ABS?

You should be able to get a Fernco coupling, split it , then wrap it around the pipe with the split on the opposite of the leak, then tighten the clamps. That should work. But you should replace it eventually, holes usually mean the pipe is not in very good condition, and more holes may appear later.

And my guess is that you are talking about a lead stub that is getting eaten up... This definitely needs to be cut back closer to the cast iron... then you can use a fernco rubber coupling to convert to pvc to come out of the wall and reconnect to the sink drain... If there is a hole all the way through it, you can bet it won't be the last problem you will have with it...
