Hot Water Heater Overheating

My electric water heater keeps overheating and spewing hot water out the emergency escape pipe or tripping the reset button. I've tried adjusting the temp all the way to the lowest setting. Does anyone what could be causing this, and what I would have to do to fix it? Could it be a bad element or thermostat or what?

It would not be an element. It could be a defective upper or lower thermostat. Change them both. They are cheap.

Remeber to shut the power off to the heater before working with the stats.

You can do a Search above on changing water heater tstats.
Just change the wires ONE AT A TIME from the old to the new. Can't go wrong.
Good Luck!
