dripping faucet in tub

We have a washerless faucet in our tub. It was dripping, so we took the handles off and the stem out with the inlet seal and took it to the hardware store. Since the manufacture of the fixture had gone out of business they gave us the seals that they thought would fit. They seem to fit ok, we got everything back together but when we were done the handles were facing up instead of straight out like when we started. We tried to get them to there original place, but we just couldn't figure out exactly what was wrong. When we turned the water back on the off and on were opposite from what they originally were but it didn't dripp anymore so we thought it would be alright. By the next day it was dripping again and each day it gets worse. We are now at a loss. What sould we do now?
