Terra Cotta sewer pipe with hole in it

I was relocating a shrub today, and my shovel hit something solid to the one side. I immediately realized what it was, so I carefully finished removing the shrub and cleared the dirt around the sewer pipe. Well, there's a quarter-sized hole at the top of the pipe. Is there something I should do about this, or won't it be a big deal. I also noticed when I looked into the pipe that it was about 1/2 full. I assume this is normal?

You have a couple of problems.

The easiest fix is also the worst in this case. Wrap some cardboard around the pipe where it is expose and then cover with concrete.
Quick easy, but not long lasting.

The pipe breaking is not good. The fact is is half full is worse. Could be a root problem stopping the flow to the street sewer or the pipe could have settled with some bellies causing water to stand in it.
Now it has a hole, and most likely cracks running the length of the pipe section.
The only good news is that you know about it now and not some time in the future when you have a blockage that can not be cleared.

I would look at replacing the line from the house out to where you expose good pipe. This can be very pricey to have done. You could get some estimates for replacing the line and then see if you want to do it yourself.

Good luck with this and if you have more questions, ask away and someone will answer you.
