Facuet Copper fitting and Compression nut

I have a faucet from American Standard that has two copper lines coming out of it. I bought some compression connectors from Home Depot, but I can not get them to tighten. I even brought the faucet with me to home depot and the guy goes slide this on and tighten. Any idea what the heck i am doing wrong here?

Cool

Did you slide the nut and then the brass ring ferrule onto the tubing, and then try to tighten the fitting?
Are you holding a backup wrench on the fitting when tightening the nut?

Good for you! That's what DIY is all about (plus the fun).
