Question water softening

I want to install water softening but my friend said it's not good to do because it will leak due to the age of my house (over 16 years old). Please let me know if this is true and is there a way that I can install water softening without running into problem in the future.

thanks in advance

What will leak? The new softener or the house plumbing? The softener should not affect the existing plumbing in any "bad" way.
