sump pump cycling

Is it normal for a sump pump to remain running for extended amounts of time? Should the sump pit empty quickly when the sump turns on?

Depends on the size of the sump, the volume of water that the pump can move, the amount (and rate) of the incoming water, and the size of the discharge line.

But if you are noticing that the pump is running longer than it used to, then it is time to clean things out. Pull the pumb and make sure it's intake is clear, then make sure the discharge line is clear.
