faucets running water in off position

I thought I was seeing things! The kitchen faucet started running for no apparent reason. Had to turn the main off. WHY?

Cool

What brand is it? Single-handle?

Two handle, brand unknown. Probably original fixture, (50 years old).

Thanks,

Cool

Most likely it is a compression type faucet then.
Both the hot and the cold valves will have black rubber washers on the end of the stem. One has apparently just disintegrated.
With the water main still off, remove the faucet handles and unscrew the retaining caps around the stem counter-clockwise to remove the valve stems.
Replace the washers.
They will likely have o-rings on the valves also, so replace those too.
If that doesn't solve the problem, this may be the time to replace the faucet and add individual shut-off valves on the hot and cold lines under the sink.
You can do a Search above on Faucets to find illustrated how-to information, or just come back and ask.
Good luck!
Mike
