Damaged Pipe Threads

I have a pipe inside a wall where the threads on an elbow to a tub spout are damaged. I actually looks like a hack saw blade cut into the threads to the bottom or a hair below. The joint leaks at about 1 drop a second with the shower engaged. Since I don`t want to tear the wall apart to replace the joint, what can I use to seal the threads? Will Pipe dope or Pipe Joint compound work?

You can try a combination of teflon tape and pipe dope. I have reservations on this repair, the tape would fill in the missing threaded area better than just pipe dope by itself.

If it still leaks, 2 choices....fix it right or live with it leaking....
