well?

I have a gould jet pump for my well, my problem is that ,when the water is shut off, and the well pumps the pressure back up to 60 pounds the pump shuts off and clicks on and off constantly, enough to eventually trip the breaker, I changed the pressure switch this morning, but same result, I have a 20 gallon tank that is filled with 40pounds of pressure(as per manufacturer) I have no leaks and have no clue what to do next!

What size jet pump do you have?
How close are the pump and tank? (How many feet of pipe is there between them).
What size pipe is between the pump and tank?
Any valves between the pump and tank?
I have a hunch on what may be happening, so let us know, ok?

well

Thanks for the reply Ron, the pump is 3/4 horse, it sits about 2 ft away from the tank, all pipe is copper 1 inch, no valves between pump and tank, only valve is to shut off what is going outside.. one other thing, I have lost the prime on the pump several times recently, because i had to turn off pump to stop the constant cut in/ cut out, I changed the check valve to make sure there was no leak back down the well.... thanks again for any help you could provide.
