cleaning outside of DWV cast iron pipes

I am reconfiguring the sewege lines in our master bath, and I am transitioining from the old cast iron to ABS. The outside of the pipes that have been buried beneath the surface for 50 years have all kinds of build-up and deposits on them (the inside of the pipes look good, and there is no actual corosion to the wall from what I can tell). In order to get a good seal with the neoprene coupling, I imagine, the outside of the cast iron pipe needs to be clean and smooth. Any suggestions for removing these deposits? I have tried CLR and Naval Jelly, but neither have really done a whole lot.

A good wire brush, it does not have to be squeeky clean for a good seal.
