Can't get outdoor faucet stem out??

Easy question, but I am stumped.
I have a leaky outside faucet, (not a fancy sillcock one but a standard outside faucet). I know I have changed this washer before, years ago.
Anyway, I unscrewed the handle screw. Took the handle off.
With a wrench, I took of the hex nut, (sorry, don't remember what it is called.)
Now for the life of me, I can't seem to get the stem to come out so I can replace the washer.
I am turning it counterclockwise, it moves easily. I turned it all the way counterclockwise, but it doesn't come out.
I have tried pulling the stem out, but it really doesn't want to come. Should I force it? I feel so stupid, please help.
Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.
Thanks, symboltech

It may seem hard to remove but it will give, counterclockwise, it will unscrew from there, if all else fails replace it with a new one.
