Question Water Heater knocking?

We have a Reliance 501 natural gas automatic storage water heater, dated 1991, with a 30gal output and EF of .57. Some months ago it started to make a sound similar to a quiet knock after we would run the hot water, especially in the mornings. We've lived in this house for 2 1/2 years and I'm wondering, does this sound mean it's corroding? The noise has increased in volume and it happens every time we run the hot water now. Should we replace it right away and if so can we do it ourselves? Can we replace it with an electric or does it have to be natural gas like the current one? We haven't drained it since we moved in.
Thanks for any info!

Cool

usually strange noises from a water heater mean a build-up of sediment in the tank.
Attach a water hose to the drain spigot and flush the sediment from it to see if that doesn't stop it.
Good Luck!
