shower (cementboard/greenboard)

Do I need to put cement board from shower floor all the way to celing, or can I at some point transition to greenboard (say 4' up from shower floor to celing)?

Depends on what you are putting over the cement board / greenboard.

You'll recieve different responses from people who swear by either this product or that product. (i.e. greenboard, wonderboard, durock)
In your case, I'd go as high with cement board as you think water will touch the tile. Any grouted joint will eventually allow water to seep through. You can buy 3' X 5' sheets of cementboard (durock) and that will get you close.

Hope this helps you out, take your time and have fun. More questions, ask away and someone else may answer them...without the delay I had.
