disconnecting gas pipe

How do you start undoing gas pipe connections? It seems as you loosen one end of a pipe the other end tightens. How do you start the disconnection?

Usually you either go from one end and work your way backwards or you can find a union and go from there. Make sure the gas is off first though.

If you cannot get to a union before penetrating to many walls and turns, turn off the gas and cut the pipe with a sawzall or pipe cutter. Replace with two nipples and a union, plus whatever other fittings you need (probably a T?).
Remember you must not loosen a gas pipe without disassembling the joint and adding new pipe joint compound. Even tightening an old joint can cause it to start leaking.
