Water heater noise ..Impending doom ?

Hi, my water heater is making a noise that sounds like crackling..almost sounds like ice melting. It is 12 years old.

Is this sound a sign of impending doom ?

Thanks
Joe

A 12 year old WH is considerably old.

Assuming the WH is a gas unit.

The "crackling" sound may be metal (flue) expansion.
The "ice melting" may be condsensate dripping onto the burner.

Reasons for condensate drip:

- Running out of hot water & depleting the storage of hot water in the tank.

Cool

And it may just be sediment "boiling" in the tank.
When is the last time that you flushed the water heater tank?
Attach a water hose to the drain spigot at the bottom, and turn it on until it runs clear
That may stop the crackling noise.
Good Luck!
