Why is softner going thru so much salt?

My water softner is really going through a lot of salt lately. Why is this happening? I use the Morton green rust inhibitor salt. The softener is about 12 years old and I'm not sure of the brand. Thank you.

Cool

Salt usage is normally determined by how often the softener is set to regenerate. Have the settings been changed lately by someone?

where's the salt going

I had the softener company look at it a few months ago for something else. I wouldn't think they'd mess it up. YOu never know, it might have been a trainee.

Is it common to regenerate the softener every day?
Thanks.

Cool

Every DAY? No.
Your water should be tested for hardness, the usage determined, and the softener set to regenerate only as necessary to take care of that hardness, OR you can experiment with it.
We use about 5,000-7,000 gallons a month and ours is set to regenerate every three days, and works fine.
I think that the softener people must have re-set it to regenerate too often.
Re-set it to regenerate every other day to see if it keeps the water as soft as you're used to, using about the same amount of salt.
If it still seems to be using more salt than you used to use, set it for every three days.
Good Luck!
