Rusty water
is it bad to have discolored water? what I mean by bad is harmful. I know where it comes from as my house has galvanized mixed with copper plumbing.

The most accurate way to determine this is to have a water sample drawn from your local waterworks in your area and let them take the sample.
I know that galvanized piping needs replacement, this material slowly disentegrates over time. Bringing the system to a complete copper piping system is your best bet.

"Rusty water" -- PROBABLY due to the galvanized pipe.
"Harmful" -- ??
Like DUNBAR says -- only way to know for sure is to have it tested.
Getting rid of ALL of the galvanized will probably cure the problem.

As a precaution.

It was discovered a few years ago that lead soldered plumbing joints would cause water standing in the pipes to absorb trace amounts of lead.
It was found that flushing the line for one minute would reduce the lead to an insignificant level.
Perhaps doing this would reduce your fears until the water is tested or the pipes replaced.
