Replacing a Sump Pump

How difficult is it to replace a sump pump? I looked at them on the Lowes website, and we have a submergable pump. Is it as easy as just pulling out the old one and submerging the new one and plugging it in???

Except for you omitted hooking up the discharge pipe, yes it is that easy. If you are lucky the original installation included a union to disconnect the discharge line.

For whatever reason, ours is not releasing the water from the rain last night, and there is water in there. I can't really see where there is a discharge pipe, but should it be very difficult to remove the discharge pipe from the old unit and install it on a new unit?

You need to figure out how it is hooked up to the discharge. the water goes somewhere :-). The biggest problem is usually reaching down into the pit if the pipe is not exposed. I prefer putting a union within a few feet of the floor outside the pit. It makes servicing a lot easier down the road.
