Angry Temp./ Pressure valve-- water heater

Hi, I opened the temp./relief valve on ym water heater as I should do once a year and it will not shut off. It has been 2-3 years I estimate since I did this. Maybe some miinerals got loose and clogged valve???
I'm thinking only solution is to replace valve...
I have shut gas off at pilot valve. Have drained tank partly to get water below valve location. Will open T/P valve to vent system and try replacing valve.
Am I overlooking anything here or headed in wrong direction??
Thanks much, Al
