stale water smell after rain

2 year old washington homes built single family house. whenever it rains, you can smell a stale water smell coming from all the main level sinks -- kitchen sink, powder room sink , and was tub sink in garage. smell is not evident in the basement or the upstairs. house does have a sump pump with a walk up basement drain outside. no evidence of water accumulation outside in the basement stairwell.

have only found the smell either during rain storm or the day or 2 following rain.

any help is greatly appreciated.

hmm.. good question. im not real sure where it goes. I do know that it has not turned on even with the heavy rains that we just got through.

in fact when i bought the house, the pump was not working due to a bad motor. it was replaced and now the pump does turn on in manual mode. again, no evidence of any water damage anywhere in the basement.

If the sump is entering the sanitary system incorrectly it can siphon traps very easily.
The next time you have a rain followed by the smell look down the drain lines and see if water is still in the traps.
