Drain/Garbage Disposal clogged??

I run my Garbage disposal and it sounds fine then starts to rumble and when I turn it off the water/garbage backup violently into the sink. I checked the catch on the DP that comes out of the GD and all clear. The other drains aren't backing up so the clog must be inside the GP? Or am I missing something? job for the Plumber? Merry Xmas and Tia.
Thx Steve

Cool

If the trap is clear, then the clog is likely in the drainpipe in the wall or floor.
You need a crank-handle flex snake to feed into the line to clear it.
Good Luck!

thx oldguy1 ?

The dp goes into the wall. There is no chance that the clog is where the GD connects to drainpipe? Or somehow it has something to do with the dishwasher which drains into GP. tia Steve

If the garbage disposal side of sink is holding water, and the opposite side is draining freely, then the tailpiece from the garbage disposal to the baffled tee is clogged. Simply remove it, clean it, clean the baffled tee and the opening to where the drain line connects to garbage disposal.

If both sinks are affected, then follow Old Guy's advice and snake the drain into the wall to remove the obstruction.

Cool

Then disconnect and check the trap and drainpipes to the wall and snake out the wall dp as suggested.
Good Luck!

Packed in along the wall. Big time mess. Any tips on preventing this or is this something that happens infrequently. I just bought the house in August so I don't have a feel. Thx Again Steve

Cool

Put as little grease or fiberous food material in disposal and drain as possible. Dump, pour and wipe pan grease, rinds, peelings, etc. into trash can instead.
Pour in a good enzyme-based (non-caustic) drain cleaner occasionally, such as DrainCare. Just follow the directions on the jug.
Good Luck!

If "packed in along the wall" means the drain ports on the sidewalls of the garbage disposer are plugged, try this:

Fill the garbage disposer with ice cubes, push them down thru the rubber seal, and pack it full. Turn on the garbage disposer and then the water. The ice chips will clear the clogged drain ports.

Thx arkayassoc

The drain pipe running down in the wall was packed, Not the disposal wall but the kitchen wall. Still if that was the case,I don't have to be concern about the disposal's blades or motor being damaged from the ice cubes? Tia Steve

Ice cubes won't hurt the disposal.

Sounds to me the lines needs a good cleaning out with a machine.

Other things to NEVER put down a disposal are fiberous materials like celery or flower stems.

My wife ran a bunch of flower stems down the disposal earlier this year. Worst clog I've ever seen!!! Made me regret buying her roses when I hadn't done anything.

Dave, Dave, Dave, ...

Buyin' the wife roses is one thing -- but then she puts them down the disposal???

Man, you only THOUGHT you hadn't done nuthin'!!!

Seriously -- you've got to add the granular stuff to the fiberous stuff. Add coffee grounds to the rose stems -- ice cubes to the celery stalks and potato peels!

One other thing to keep in mind is it's best to use COLD water when running the disposal as it tends to keep the greese that does get in these, in a congealed (jelled) state. Warm or hat water will allow the greese to soften and cling to the interior pipe surfaces better.

Possibly true, but the dishwasher dumps several gallons of hot water every time it runs, so it probably doesn't make a lot of difference what you use when you run the disposal

My gusess is that's probably true for the 'rinse & hold' cycle, but on a wash cycle the dishwasher soap will probably break down the greese so that it isn't a concern. (IMHO)

Best wishes for 2004!
