If you're on public water, there is a rectangular brass knob shut-off valve on the meter, and there may be a shut-off valve on the home side of the meter in or near the meter base, and a shut-off valve where the main water line from the meter enters your home.
The main shut-off valve near your home may be in the ground in a large upright pipe, or on the main water line after it enters your home in a basement.
Depends on how and where it was plumbed.
I have four main water supply shut-offs that I can use, for instance. One on the meter, one at the meter, one just outside the crawlspace base of my home, and one inside in my utility room before the main line goes into a water softener.
Just look around, you'll find it. It may be a round handle gate valve or a lever handle ball valve.
If you're turning off the water for any length of time or draining anything down, also turn off the power or gas to your water heater to keep from damaging it.
Good Luck!
