water level in toilet has dropped one inch

The water level in my toilet bowl has dropped by an inch. I know this because hard water had etched a ring in the enamel and the water had always been at that level for years. But now the water level is one inch below the etched ring. What made the water level drop? Who can explain this to me? Should I be worried?

hello, has it been like this for long ?
i would look at the overflow tube and make sure it is not kinked or plugged and pointing all the way in the overflow pipe. you could even check the barb on the fill valve to make sure it is not plugged. you can also try to slowly pour some water in the toilet bowl to try and bring the level back up and wait and see if it drops again by it self. if it does then i have to think that the trapway is cracked.

The fillvalve in the toilet tank brings the bowl back up to operational level, if it's not working right, this will cause the problem.
