broken sump pump?

House is just over a year old. The sump pump rarely if ever comes on, but I periodically lift the float to ensure that it works and it always has. This time however the pump just made a small buzzing water sucked in. THe well as usual has a small amount of water in it, but far below the point where the pump would kick in.

I'm wondering if the pump may be shot, or if there's some maintenance I can try on it. I'm hoping it's not shot as it is only a little over a year old. It is a 1/3 hp, Flotec non-submersible. Anyone have any ideas? THanks.

Disconnect the pump at the check valve and pull pump out of the pit.

Check to see if there is a 1/8" hole drilled in the pump discharge line within 6" of the pump.

It sounds like the pump is airlocked.

Running water through the pit periodically is the best maintenance for the pump.
