lydia: The septic system permitting agency can tell you. Don't you have to get a permit in CA? Here, they custom-design the systems and modifications, and inspect/approve before we can bury the lines. That way, you'll know that it will work for you.

Old Guy is right.
Also when my parents needed a new leach field they also needed a new septic tank as the old septic tank l had a problem where the dividing wall collaped. this in turn ruined the leach field. So you may or may not need a new tank.
In a nutshell A leach field consists of the following maybe more or less depending on code.
Perferated Pipe- Pipe with holes that allow the water to drain away.
Rock for the bed of the leach field.
A distribution box that would allow the leach lines to branch out.
I know on a new install in Colorado part of the process is to have a Perk test done. This calculated how fast water drains away. This is in turn used to calculate how many feet of leach field is needed. I am not sure whether an existing one would need this or not.
