Question

Just bought a condo, built in 1970. I was goingto replace the shower head with a new message-type shower head, but the pipe coming out of my shower wall is NOT one of those with the threaded end. It has a built-in ball and shower head on the end. Is it possible and advisable for me to take that pipe out and replace it with a threaded-end pipe? What is the procedure?

Simply get a shower arm that has threads on both ends. Unscrew you present arm, wrap the threads of the new one with 2 or 3 wraps of teflon tape and thread it in. After you have it hand tight, wrap a rag around it and grip it with a pair of channel locks and continue tightening until you have it positioned correctly. Now wrap the exposed end with 2 or 3 wraps of teflon tape and install your new head. Should work just fine.
