my hot water heater is making a knocking sound when it is heating up, any ideas?

it sounds like thermal expansion, but you didn't give us much background to go on. Such as:
1)Did this just start?
2) is the heater new?
3) do you have a backflow preventer on your water line?
4) ect ect ect.
install a 2.5 gal. thermal expansion tank on the incoming cold water line befoe it goes into the water heater.

SOUNDS LIKE A FAIRLY OLD HEATER THAT HAS AN ACCUMULATION OF SEDIMENT IN THE BOTTOM CREATING THE RUMBLING ??
