Vent Valve Purpose

Hello!

While remodeling the Utility Room in the house we recently bought, where the washer and dryer sit, am guessing the point between the washer and dryer there is an approx. 2" pipe at waist level angling out of the wall, having a "screw on" plastic cap with the words "Vent Valve".

What is it and its purpose?

Guessing a cleanout but thought the cap might say "cleanout" instead.

Hoping it isn't something we have to remove each time we use the washing machine.

Thanks,

Hopro

Sounds like a AAV, or Air-Admittance Valve. This allows for your drainage system to take air from the atmosphere when the piping is draining. This device can and will go bad, and needs replacement once there is evidence of sewer gases emitting from the valve.
