How much do whole house water softening systems run?Are they hard to install and does anyone have any good tips on how to maintain a well? We are new to this so any tips would be appreciated.

Good whole house water softners usually run about $1,000, but last for many years. They are easy to install. Run main water supply with cutoff to it and back to main supply line, and it needs a drain that you can stick brine tank discharge hose into (I use same drain as washing machine hose). And it needs a 110v outlet to plug in. You can do it with PVC pipe, fittings and glue. Make sure that you put it where it won't freeze, and has easy access to dump 80-lb. salt bags into brine tank. Maintaining a well primarily means maintaining the pump and its components, if it's a shallow well. Contact your pump manufacturer, if you can't find the papers that came with it. Good Luck!
