Dish Washer Air Gap

Exactly what is the "Air Gap" in the dishwasher drain line required in some areas by code ? What does it actually do ? Is it of any real value ?

An airgap for a dishwasher drain is there to prevent backflow into the dishwasher if the kitchen sink backs up.
The airgap needs to be higher then the bottom of the sink so if the sink backs up you will see it in the sink long before you see it flowing out of the dishwasher door.
This airgap can be a device that sits on the sink deck, or, you can can provide the airgap by hanging the drian hose under the sink where it will set higher the the bottom of the sink.
Hope this explained it to you.

Thanks for the info. I know local code doesn't require it but it does sound like it's worth the minimal effort needed to install it.<HR>
It's not hard to add an airgap.
