mixer taps

I do not know anything about plumbing but have a problem with the mixer tap on my shower. The hot and cold water mixes fine when coming out of the tap but when I switch it to the shower it does not mix and either goes entirely scalding hot, or you have to turn the hot down to a trickle at which point it loses pressure and becomes freezing. Is this a problem I can fix, and how?

What type of valve is it? The brand?
