Our shallow well water pump will not turn itself off, how can i find out why, and how to repair the problem?

Cool

Several things could be causing your pump not to shut off, but if you still have good water pressure, it is probably something to do with your pressure switch. Take the cover off (be careful- you will have exposed hot wires), and adjust the spring-loaded nut down on the smaller one. (The larger one is for your cut-on). See if that doesn't help make it cut off properly. If it doesn't, the water port to the pressure switch may be plugged with sediment, and you can take the switch off and clean it out, or replace the switch. The pressure switch is where I would start. If this doesn't help, come back here to ask one of the pro plumbers (I'm not one). Good Luck!
