Toilet Flange
#1

We just had our flooring replaced in our bathroom and we were told the tiolet flange needs to be lowered. Our toilet is sitting 1/4" off the floor. How do we do it? Please help!

Lefty, Thankyou for responding. The floor is wood circa 1948(approx.) with cast iron piping. The flange may have been built up at one time since they had to remove 2 layers of flooring(asbestos tile and vinyl). I don't know how to tell if it has been built up or even if that matters. Thanks so much for your help.

Whoever replaced the floor should have added another 1/4" of underlayment tp compensate for the height of the flange. They should have seen it when they had the underlayment in place, before the finished flooring went down. In fact, this is something they should have CHECKED!! Was this a licensed contractor who replaced the floor? If so, call them and complain. They should remedy the situation at no additional cost to you. If they bulk at that, call your state's contractor's licensing board. THAT will get their attention!

Yes call them back out and have them add the needed floor, you don't need that flange that high, will make for a thin wax seal on the toilet and will cause floor damage if and when the wax ring fails.

Thank you Lefty and Plumber2000 for your replies.I called the flooring installer and told him your suggestions. He said he did put down a 1/4" underlayment and that the flange was high to begin with. This does sound true since we did notice a large amount of plumbers putty around the tiolet in the past and it had a slight rock. The floor does appear to be the same height as before (upon closer inspection). There is about a 3/8" step up from the hallway(which has a wood floor)into the bathroom. Another 1/4" would cause tripping I think. Old houses are so much fun! I'm thinking of taking the toilet out and see what the flange looks like but I don't know what to look for if it has been raised. FYI, I looked at the floor heating register opening just to make sure he was telling the truth and I do see a 1/4" of material there. Thankyou for your advice!!
